These fortifications used to protect the entire coastal face of the Medieval City, right in front of all three moles of the Rhodian harbours. There are scattered remains of that fortification in archaeological sites throughout the Medieval City, namely in the Agios Panteleimon district, the Mole of the Windmills, ea. Over the centuries, the Hellenistic fortification was to be utilized in a variety of ways as was, for instance, the case of the Byzantine and later on, the Knightly era, when sections of the fortifications were dismantled and the materials used in the development of other projects.
According to Pausanias the historian, that used to be a fortification system of great importance, second only to the Walls of Messini.
