This building had, at the time of its inauguration, in 1964, been originally meant to host the Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes. The premises are those of a medieval construction, situated on Symis square, on the right side of Liberty Gate. The Museum of Modern Greek Art hosts a variety of plastic art creations inspired by modern Greek culture, a term used to designated the period of time from the 15th century AD to present. Part of the complex is nowadays harbouring the collection of the Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes, featuring, among other, samples of maps, engraving works as well as occasional exhibitions by prominent Greek artists. A new branch of this Museum has recently been inaugurated on “100 Hourmadies” (100 Palm trees square) in the City of Rhodes: referred to as “Nestorideion Melathron”, the new premises feature a spacious hall fit for the hosting of a wide array of cultural events and exhibitions. Last but not least, the Modern Art Centre, housed in the knightly building of the Old Refectory, on top of Socratous street, in the Medieval City, also hosts exhibitions of works of various artists.
