Church of St. Francis of Assisi

Launched in 1936, under the Italian rule of the island, construction works on this church were brought to completion three years later. It is situated next to the Gate of Agios Athanasios (St. Athanasius) and continues to this day to function as the official parish church of the Roman Catholic Church of Rhodes.
One of the features worth noting about this church is the larger-than-life statue of St. Francis, standing in the outside area of the church as well as the recently refurbished belfry, from the top of which the views over the city and beyond are simply stunning. The church of St. Francis has also made a reputation for its excellent acoustics, hence its frequent hosting of Sacred Music events.
Holy Mass here is celebrated in Greek although hand-outs are available at the entrance, featuring the psalms translated in 12 different languages.
